Uptake of climate-smart agricultural technologies and practices: A Three-phase Behavioral Model

behavioral design

These decisions are full of stories they tell themselves and full of irrational beliefs they hold. Furthermore, even the slightest difference in how something is framed can dramatically affect how people perceive the meaning. When an English native speaker says they think something is “interesting”, it usually means precisely the opposite. Whereas a non-native Dutch audience would think “interesting” means what they think it means. The more familiar you get with how the brain works and how influence works, the more you become aware that human behaviour obeys a different kind of logic than formal logic.

Integrating behavior Design + Technology

Behavioral design uses these insights to shape environments that navigate intuitive choices and support deliberate decision-making when needed. It’s a design approach that has various influences, including but not limited to the ones discussed here. I suppose we all have a responsibility to make digital products healthier to use, don’t we? Halpern put this approach into practice at the Behavioural Insights Team in the UK Civil Service, but this description also indicates how implementation science could be informed by behavioral economics. It means considering how humans really behave within the context of implementation, not how we hope they will behave. The field is still small and behavioral designers are generally very accessible.

Habit Formation and Change

behavioral design

Governs the storage of data necessary for maintaining website security, user authentication, and fraud prevention mechanisms. To make small numbers seem big, let’s use Guthrie Weinschenk’s example of cigarettes. If you’re trying to convince someone of the damage they’re doing to their lungs by smoking, imagine you could show them how many cigarettes they would smoke in their lifetime.

Eight starter tactics

To enable the process of behavioural change through design, a range of theories, guidelines and tools have been developed to promote behaviour change that encourages pro-environmental and social actions and lifestyles from designers as well as user. Continuous testing and refinement of a website or product based on real user feedback is crucial to apply behavioral design principles effectively. Designers can use techniques like A/B testing, user interviews and analytics to gather feedback and make data-driven decisions to refine and improve their user experience. By challenging the traditional economic theory that assumes human rationality, behavioral economics introduces the idea of "bounded rationality," where cognitive biases and heuristics limit decision-making. Richard Thaler and Cass Sunstein developed the "nudge" concept—subtle cues or modifications in the choice architecture (the way in which choices are presented to people that influence their decisions without restricting their freedom of choice).

This is often seen in e-commerce UX design, where messages like "Only 3 left in stock" or "Sale ends in 2 hours" encourage users to make purchases more promptly. Loss aversion refers to people's tendency to prefer avoiding losses to acquiring equivalent gains. Designers can use this principle by highlighting what users stand to lose if they don't take a certain action, such as a discount expiring, to encourage prompt decision-making. Defaults are pre-selected options that users are more likely to stick with due to inertia or decision-making fatigue.

Default settings in electronic health records have changed prescribing behavior [2]. And recent scholarship has highlighted the scope for improving cancer screening pathways by removing unnecessary friction and paperwork, sometimes described as ‘sludge’ [4, 13]. A myriad of fields, skills and insights come together to create the overarching discipline of user experience design. Psychology and behavioral science play a big part in UX design because understanding people, the way their minds work, what they want and don’t want, will help us create better products and services and, consequently, more successful designs.

NirandFar is about the intersection of psychology, technology, and business. Do this is if you like writing, especially the academic and technical variety, and prefer focused learning and research in one area. There are many, many more books to read, so I encourage you to find other works. Start with the best sellers for an easier starting point and work your way to the more academic and technical works. Despite this level of interest, the path to doing this work can be quite ambiguous. For those who read books like Nudge and are inspired to put Choice Architecture into practice much like I was, it’s unclear what they should do next.

This reinforces learning and keeps users motivated by showing progress in real-time. Google Flights is a good example of nudges—it highlights carbon emissions for flights. Users can see the environmental impact of their flight choices and this encourages them to select more eco-friendly options without restricting their choice of flights.

What is Behavior Design Thinking?

Thus, behavioral science research should inform all product decisions—especially strategic ones. Designers can tailor a user experience to individual users' preferences, behaviors and past interactions to make a product more engaging and effective. Personalization can involve customized content, personalized recommendations, or adaptive interfaces that change based on user behavior. People are more willing than ever before to spend money on things that don’t come with these negative effects.

Another important takeaway was looking at what features influence what videos the algorithm shows you. In the study, we labeled each video within a user’s timeline as an “exploration video” or an “exploitation video.” An exploration video is not linked to videos that the user has seen before — for instance, there are no similar hashtags or creators. The idea is that there’s some value in the algorithm showing you new stuff. There’s also probably value for TikTok, because the more you see the same stuff, the more bored you get. Roesner and collaborators will present two papers this month that mine real-world data to help understand the “black box” of TikTok’s recommendation algorithm and its impact.

Designers and policymakers must ensure that interventions are transparent, voluntary and genuinely serve the best interests of their target audience. I’ve used behavioral design at Livongo, Teladoc, and Dario Health to promote healthy behaviors for our members, applying various techniques to drive engagement and achieve clinical outcomes. Rinad Beidas is grateful to her colleagues at the Penn Center for Health Incentives and Behavioral Economics for their partnership in bringing behavioral economics to implementation science. While behavioral economics offers new insights to boost implementation science, it is important to highlight potential limitations to this approach. Human behavior is the last mile challenge to many seemingly intractable problems in improving the human condition. Many scientific discoveries are unevenly accessed and delivered due to an underappreciation for how social and behavioral factors might interface with the implementation of these discoveries.

Addictive digital products also tend to have some kind of reward mechanism to keep users engaged. Digital addiction is bad for your mental health and your physical health, but you probably knew that already and frankly are sick of hearing about it, so let’s take a look at how digital addiction actually affects people on a day-to-day basis. The Behavioral Health Center offers services from six different County agencies assisting people with social and mental health needs.

Two behavioral economic typologies, EAST and MINDSPACE offer guides for researchers considering incorporating heuristics and biases into implementation strategy design [14, 42]. First, we provide a general overview of implementation science and ways in which implementation science has been limited to date. Second, we review principles of behavioral economics and describe how concepts from BE have been successfully applied to healthcare including nudges deployed in the electronic health record.

Humans can be influenced by the size of partitions and how they are grouped and framed. Use big groups and fewer partitions to keep people in the automatic decision-making mode and make small numbers seem big. On the other end of the spectrum, use small groups and many partitions to encourage behavior change and make big numbers seem small. If you want to ensure the success of your product, you need to be acutely aware of these mental models. Let the mental model(s) of the generation(s) you’re targeting inform your design.

The Design-Build Story Behind LAs New Behavioral Health Center

behavioral design

It relies on heuristics, or mental shortcuts, and biases which are commonly repeated patterns of responses [9, 16]. System 1 runs without us noticing but is prone to errors because its heuristics and biases are generally useful but not tailored to every situation. It analyses problems logically to avoid pitfalls, but tires quickly [9]. While focused on similar outcomes, the two fields have not been explicitly woven together, thus offering an opportunity for synergizing and maximizing impact. Systemically incorporating the behavioral economics perspective into implementation science is an important opportunity to advance the field.

Social proof / pressure

Traditional design approaches, on the other hand, often focus more on aesthetics, usability, and functionality without explicitly targeting behavior change. While traditional design prioritizes the user's experience and interface usability, behavioral design integrates these aspects with a strategic emphasis on shaping user actions and decisions. No matter which of the preceding sciences you choose, they all try to better understand human thinking and human decision-making with a different focus.

Is Behavioral Design the same as UX Design?

Much of what we know in this field is the result of research from randomized controlled trials (RCT) or other methods like observational studies, surveys, and regression analyses. When you read any of the hallmark books, you’ll find the concepts presented are backed by RCTs or other forms of research from academia (and, increasingly, the private sector). The scientific method is the key to separating what’s real and what isn’t. I’ve teamed up with a panel of experts and created course on “Product Psychology” that covers everything from behavioral design to user persuasion. It’s important to understand, however, that most of these paths won’t necessarily lead you to a job with the title, “Behavior Designer.” The field is still too new and the private sector hasn’t established the role just yet.

behavioral design

Over 200k developers and product managers use LogRocket to create better digital experiences

It is not easy to change human behavior, and there are no effective hacks that will get people to do things that are against their interests (outside of extreme coercion, extreme fear mongering, etc.). Things like loss aversion framing, while useful in some circumstances, tend to not make a big difference in behavior or decision making in the real world. These are established ways of constructing elements of the user interface that users will find familiar.

Research and Experimental Methods

Behavior Design Thinking is the first methodology to integrate cutting-edge behavioral science with design thinking to drive innovation at the product, service, and experience levels. Understanding how people make decisions and how to shape their behaviour is the missing layer to turn your products, services, marketing, organisational change or policies into a success. For any professional, the ability to influence people is a crucial skill.

Behavioral Design Patterns

Behavioural Design is all about how we design choices and how we present those choices. At the end of the hook model, there is a small investment that binds the user to a product and improves it for them in the long run. The Walmart Behavioral Science Team applied Behavioral Strategy and Behavioral Design to address large problems across the company, such as checkout design, online engagement, customer retention, and new store innovation. Their work on improving the Sam’s Club new member experience and the initiative known as “Sam’s Now” is well-documented and widely recognized. You will eat more of a snack when you have a large bag, instead of multiple little bags.

These formed the basis for user stories that map the decision-making process students undergo when applying for college. “We often expect people to do things because it’s scientifically correct, or because the experts say so. But, in fact, health behaviors are very complex and very emotional for people. Nudging, he told me, is just one of the many ways behavioral design can influence human choices. It is the sort of approach LinkedIn applied in creating a progress bar on its profile page, which led to a 55 percent increase in completion rates. I use non-coercive strategies, meaning that I do not want to force the user to do anything that may be harmful, or go against the user’s will.

From general psychiatry to more specialized conditions, we offer evidence-based, compassionate care tailored just for you. Our psychiatrists, therapists, case managers and administration team work together to offer you the care and support you need. We offer care for a wide range of conditions, including anxiety, depression and obsessive-compulsive disorder, and we specialize in finding solutions when a diagnosis is especially treatment resistant. Realistically though, people often feel powerless to push back like this in a work environment, which is exactly why these new rules that are being discussed are so important. For example, people that think of X (formerly Twitter) as a game now have to pay for visibility.

behavioral design

How do you start a career in Behavioral Design?

Behavioral employment opportunities will be in cognitive or social psychology and MBA programs (often focused on marketing). Behavioral Design can be used within companies to get employees to adopt or discard certain behaviors and thus improve cooperation and corporate culture. Furthermore, Behavioral Design can be used within innovation and marketing projects to convince people to buy certain products or to perceive individual services or brands differently. Due to the intensive examination of human behavior, Behavioral Design can also be used in the design or improvement of products. In the field of public relations, the range of applications is also versatile.

The problem is that those who want to design for good quite often feel bad about using dark forces. Whereas those who use this dark wisdom to manipulate and mislead are usually much more motivated, advanced, and have fewer scruples about its application. Think about how extreme-right populists exploit fear and uncertainty, or think about how technology companies use our vanities and our desire for social recognition and belonging to the extent that it leads to (social media) addiction.

All materials related to the behavior in question should be simple and easy to understand. This framework focuses on three key elements—Capability, Opportunity, and Motivation. Though it offers insights into how behaviors form and can be influenced, it’s generally too high-level and simplistic for practical application. A product is only as successful as its ability to change or harness behavior. For instance, have you seen how accustomed young children are with touch screens? They’re far more comfortable with them than someone much older but who’s been exposed to them more.

Ethical considerations in behavioral design focus on how to respect user autonomy and avoid manipulation. Designers must ensure their work benefits users and does not exploit their psychological vulnerabilities. For example, ethical considerations are paramount to design persuasive technology, like health apps that encourage lifestyle changes without misleading or pressuring users. Nudges are subtle design cues or features that encourage users to take certain actions without restricting their freedom of choice. Designers can use nudges to guide users towards beneficial behaviors subtly.

Show that other people are taking action, so that the user is more likely to feel the action is worthwhile and valuable. Commitment gets users to pre-commit to a small action, something they are invested in, and they will lose this if they cannot follow through. This refers to users’ tendency to perceive attractive products as more usable and so inspire trust. There are literally hundreds of psychological principles and cognitive biases to choose from, but again, there is no need in getting overwhelmed.

Capt Anderson's Marina

Forge a trail through America’s Last Frontier all onboard Radiance of the Seas®, a ship designed for edge-of-the-map exploration. Boasting the most glass of any Royal Caribbean ship, it’s perfect for glacier-gazing and whale-watching in Alaska. Go from hanging with huskies in Denali to scaling glaciers in Alyeska. And if you’re craving the ultimate outdoor adventure, a Cruisetour takes you into Alaska’s interior for a few extra days exploring the wild. This includes khakis, dress pants, skirts, blouses, and sun-dresses. The Lady Anderson’s final dinner cruise will be Sept. 26, the 40th anniversary of the family’s first cruise in 1973.

While the Lady Anderson will be leaving the marina, the Andersons will continue to operate their three other passenger boats. Breathe in the 1,000-acre greenspace of Stanley Park, one of the largest urban parks in North America. Hike red cedar forest trails, relax beachside, take a horse-drawn carriage ride, or view the Brockton Point totem poles. Then walk along the Seawall, with the downtown skyline as your backdrop. Vancouver’s cultural diversity is the key ingredient to its unique culinary scene. Dozens of food trucks, street food carts and farmers’ markets offer something for every taste.
